they pulled out rotting drywall
and replaced carpet and linoleum
and updated the plumbing and electrical
connections and did it for free
and the bedridden elderly woman
was beside herself with joy
and grateful for the volunteerism
that powered the rehab job and
while everyone was distracted i
stole her cheap jewelry and at
the fried chicken watermelon potato
salad picnic later the gold
clanked loudly in my pocket.
